When rockfall started out the workweek by closing Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon Monday morning, it cut off about one-fifth of the American Gypsum workforce from the company?s plant.
The wallboard maker, located in Gypsum east of the canyon, runs on 12-hour shifts.

New warning system used for Glenwood Canyon rockslide
Monday?s closure of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon resulted in the first use of a new system designed to notify the public of emergencies and issue other community alerts.
Garfield County sheriff spokesman Phil Strouse said the system goes beyond emergency notification systems that just call home phone numbers. Instead, it can notify any participant via a cell phone call, text message or e-mail.

Palisade buys vacant land north of downtown
The town of Palisade moved quickly to buy nearly an acre of land north of downtown, with town officials saying the purchase was a good deal that would give them control over an important piece of property.
Town trustees voted 4-0 Tuesday night to purchase three vacant parcels on the west side of Main Street north of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for $125,000. Mayor Dave Walker and trustees David Hull and Michael Krueger were absent from the meeting.

Holy Family seventh-grader state spelling bee runner-up
Three months of studying and spelling words for 30 to 45 minutes a night paid off last weekend for Holy Family Catholic School seventh-grader Sam Cyphers.
Cyphers placed second in the Colorado State Spelling Bee on Saturday in Denver. He spelled words such as ?pickelhaube? and ?allargando? correctly to climb to the top, but fell short of first place when he misspelled ?impetus? in the 16th round of the oral competition.
